Week of March 21-25

Hi Families,

When you are working with your child on writing, please allow them to try to sound out the words they are trying to write rather than just telling  them the spelling.  We want them to be able to hear the sounds in the word and to transfer that knowledge to paper.  For example, they may write “soccer” as “sokr.”  This is exactly what we want to see at this point in the school year.  Inventive spelling is an important stage in their writing development. You will eventually see a transition into correct spelling.  This is another reason knowing their sounds is so important!  Thank you for your help in your child’s writing development.  It is  exciting to see them blossoming!

Week of March 7-10*

Hi Families,

Just a reminder to find some time to read to your child each night.  This will help in their reading journey in so many ways!  They should be far enough along in their reading development at this point to be reading to you as well.  They may not know all the words in a particular book, however, can be practicing a mix of CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words and sight words.  It is important to let them use the pictures for clues.  This is a strategy we teach them in school.  Eventually they will be fluent enough to not rely so much on the pictures.  I hope you are enjoying seeing your child blossom this year in kindergarten!  Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

As we begin to add more sight words to our list, you may notice your child confusing the words that begin with “w.”  This is very common especially as we continue to introduce additional “w” words.  Playing a Memory Game with only the “w” words is a great way to help with this.  Make sure they are reading the words after each match!

*This week we are introducing our second vowel “i.”  Please practice the SHORT vowel sounds for “a” and “i” with your child at home.  Have your child begin to blend CVC simple words (hat – bit – can – rip – sad).  They will most likely get the vowel sounds confused as they are blending at first.  You may want to make the vowel on your flash cards a different color than the consonants.
In addition, CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words ending in “n” are typically more difficult than words ending with other consonants.  You may hear your child saying the “t” sound at the end of words ending in “n.” This is because the “n” sound is harder for children at this age to make.  Repetition and making it fun is the key!
Beginning this week the students will now be exposed to six sight words per week.  This is a big transition from our previous two per week. Practice at home may help your child acquire these words.  A few tips:  (1) Kids LOVE games!  Make it a game and allow them to have fun with it.  (2) Set aside a little time each day to spend with your child practicing these words.  They will begin to look forward to this time every day if the stress level is low and they know they will be playing a game with you. (3) Be sure to ask your child to create a sentence with the sight word in it and say it orally to you.  The students are used to doing this in class.  When children at this age memorize words only in isolation, they tend to forget them easily.  Creating a sentence allows them to attach meaning to the word giving them more opportunity to remember it!

Please have your child practice at home:  CVC words with “n” (pan – man – ran – can).  Kindergarten students will tend to place the “t” sound at the end of these words because the “t” sound is easier for them to form then the “n.”  Remind them to put their tongue on the roof of their mouths when saying the sound.

Blending Practice:  Continue practicing CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words with short “a.”  Use word families with “at” and “ap.”  Example:  cat – hat – sat – mat – bat – cap – map – tap – lap.  When practicing at home, please ask your child to use an object to track the sounds from left to right slowly (pen, pencil, craft stick, etc…).

Week of November 8th:

New Concept:  Word families:  Blending “at” family words

This week we will begin blending CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant).  We will start with “at” family words such as cat – mat – sat – bat.  Blending is a concept we work on all year long in kindergarten.  For most students, it is a process that requires a lot of practice.  We will be doing many songs and activities in class to help with this process.  Making learning fun is the key to successful young readers!

Week of October 25th:

Sight Words to Know:  I – like – the – and – see – we

New Sight Word:  a

Letters and Sounds to Know:  Mm – Ss – Aa – Tt

New Letter and Sound:  Cc

The students need to read the above words by “sight,” meaning they shouldn’t have to sound them out.  They do not need to know how to spell them at this point, however, it is always helpful when we are working on writing assignments.  Your child is learning motions to go along with the letters.  This helps them to memorize the letters and sounds in a fun and routinized manner.  Ask your child to repeat them for you.  Most of all, try and get them to relax and have fun while practicing!

Week of October 18th:

Sight Words to Know:  I – like – the – and – see

New Sight Word:  we

Letters and Sounds to Know:  Mm – Ss – Aa

New Letter and Sound:  Tt

Week of October 11th:

Sight Words to Know:  I – like – the – and

Letters and Sounds to Know:  Mm – Ss

We will begin our first vowel this week letter Aa.  We will focus only on the short sound for now (alligator, apple, ant).  We will also work on a new sight word “see.”  Please practice these letters, sounds and sight words with your child at home.

Week of October 4th:

This week we are working on the letter Ss “Sammy Seal” and reviewing the letter Mm.  We will also be reviewing the four sight words the students are currently working on:  I – like – the – and.  Please review these words with your child.  Just a reminder:  the students do NOT need to know how to spell them.  They need to be able to recognize the words in isolation and within a sentence.  Remember to try and make practicing letters, sounds and sight words fun for them at home!  There are a lot of songs on youtube for both letters and sight words.  Kids have an easier time memorizing when the information is musical.  As always, please let me know if you have any questions regarding working with your child at home.

Week of September 27th:

The Kindergarteners completed their letter preview!  On Monday, we will begin working on our Alphafriends.  The Alphafriends are used to introduce each letter of the alphabet in a fun and exciting way.  We will begin with the letter Mm and spend a full week on each letter character.  We use songs, games and activities to enhance the letter characters and to keep the students engaged in the process of learning to read. Remember, learning to read for this age group should be fun and relaxed!  Please keep this in mind as you are working with your child at home.  Students should also currently be able to recognize the sight words I – like – the.  The sight word “and” will be introduced this week.

Week of September 13th:

We will be finishing up our preview of the alphabet by the end of the week of the 20th.  The students have also began learning their first two sight words “I” and “like.”  Creating oral sentences is an excellent way to apply what they have learned to real life situations.  Ask your child to make up a sentence using the two sight words they know (examples:  “I like to play in the park.”).  You will see how their vocabulary improves throughout the year by practicing this!

Week of August 16th:
For the next several weeks the students will be working on a preview of the alphabet.  The purpose is to give them a brief introduction to the letters.  I will also be introducing a few beginning sight words.  Remember that at this age, children are still learning differences between letters and whole words. They will often become confused when introducing the sight words “A,” “a” and “I” because they are also individual letters.  We will work on this in class with oral practice and games.
Printing:  While the students are previewing the alphabet, I will be asking them to practice on their white board tables in class.  White boards are a great way to introduce children to printing letters in a more relaxed and informal manner.  White board printing is easily erasable!  The goal is to allow the children to become comfortable with printing during this letter preview time.  When they move to paper printing, I will be looking for their best effort.  Later in the school year, we will work on one letter a week.  At that time, we will talk more about correct formation.  In addition, it is important that your child hold their pencil correctly.  Two or three finger grasp is considered an acceptable grip. Thank you for your help with this at home.
